Lundi 16 avril 2018

The wind has calmed
down last night and is north, so it no longer pushes us against the dock. It's
gray, a little misty, don’t see the sun. We go to the largest of the three (!)
shops and buy some nuts and chocolate that we put in Jenny’s plastic box. We
turn and turn a little to find her house, Psara has many small streets, and
Jens breaks into her garden to put the box in front of her door. Psara is very
small now, but before was a pretty big city, 7000 inhabitants, proof of that
are the two huge churches. In July 1824, during the war with Turkey, Psara was
attacked by the Turks. Rather than surrender, the inhabitants and Greek
soldiers gathered in the fort and, at the moment of the final assault from the
Turks, blew themselves up rather than surrender, loyal to the motto of their
flag "Freedom or Death ". Men who were not in the fort were
slaughtered and women and children sold as slaves. And that was in 1824, it was
not the Middle Age. The island has remained uninhabited for more than 100 years
and it is only in the second half of the twentieth century that people have
returned to settle there. What a
tragic story.
We have lunch then go
by bike to the Archaeological Park that we find closed, but a wall and an old
fence does not stop my anarchist husband. We climb over and "visit"
the park which seems abandoned. The only ones which thrive here are the wild
flowers, it's all blue. Back to the boat, blog, DIY for Jens then last dinner
at Nikos and Athena’s taverna. After a good dinner, we say goodbye to them.
When will we meet again? Where ? We wish them good luck and hope to keep in
touch.
